Unfortunately, this was a huge disappointment and I ended up DNFing.
Right from the introduction, the author refers to a trans lesbian as “a straight man claiming to be a lesbian” and from that point on I was pretty much checked out.
I believe that the discussions around sex and gender, and the idea that gender is a social construct, are valid and important – these conversations do not need to come at the expense of trans people.
The author seems to be in favour of a JK Rowling branch of “feminism” that paints the trans rights movement as an attack on women’s rights. This attitude sets us back and actually undermines any message that she is trying to convey regarding lesbianism. She shows a clear disdain for men, a disdain so strong that she targets trans women for being born male and treats them as an affront to women. In fact, she seems to abhor any person who is not a cis lesbian.
I was also horrified when she expressed a hatred of Pride because apparently it’s for perverts….
Clearly, her knowledge of the queer community and its history is minimal and biased. Her account is tainted with hatred and discrimination.
Absolutely disgusting, transphobic and was not the thoughtful exploration of lesbian issues I was hoping for.
