I really struggled with this. I’d heard so many good things about it and I’ve read a couple of other books by Nick Roberts that I thoroughly enjoyed, so I figured I was going to love this! But after only a couple of chapters, I really lost interest.
The opening scene was pretty good; it built up a lot of suspense, and the gore was well done throughout. (Which is what earned it the two stars) But the characters and everything else around the horror scenes fell flat.
The dialogue was extremely cringey at times, which can be funny and campy when done right, but it didn’t work for me. The characters were extremely underdeveloped and one-dimensional; I did not feel attached to any of them because they felt like cardboard cutouts. I was constantly questioning what on earth people were thinking because they kept making weird decisions. The worst decision was possibly when the couple’s daughter came home confused, with no memory of what happened, covered in dirt and sporting a head injury – and the parents didn’t take her to the hospital or call the police.
I was constantly left to wonder if there were going to be any consequences for their actions. But so many strands of the story were just cut short and forgotten about without anything interesting coming of it.
The lore/rules around the entity felt very thin and questionable. The demon seemed undefeatable at times, but at other times it seemed pretty pathetic.
I found myself skim-reading towards the end just to get it over with.
It was very unsatisfying and underwhelming.
